Whitepaper #4: Latency-Optimized TSN Networks
Fraunhofer IPMS
Time-sensitive networking (TSN) is an important component when implementing modern industrial concepts such as the Internet of Things (IoT) and it is also called the „backbone of Industry 4.0.“ Developed as a set of Ethernet sub-standards by the IEEE 802.1 TSN Task Group, TSN reduces the limits between information technologies (IT) and operational technologies (OT) due to the continual adaptation and optimization of existing Ethernet standards. In this regard, TSN enables the use of different protocols by a joint infrastructure throughout the entire network by organizing critical real-time data traffic and non-critical data traffic so that neither the real-time characteristics nor the optimal performance of the data transfer are impeded.
